De la Brosse came from the lower nobility of the Touraine and already served in the court administration of King Louis IX. in lower position. Opposite King Philip III. he became a favorite and influential advisor. He used his position above all to protect close family members and for self-enrichment, with which he incurred the displeasure of the high nobility. Queen Maria of Brabant was the de la Brosse's greatest rival for influence over the king.

In 1278 De la Brosse fell in favor of the king after incriminating letters, the content of which is unknown today, were leaked to the king. Presumably, De la Brosse was accused of poisoning the thirteen-year-old Crown Prince Ludwig , who died in 1276 . In any case, De la Brosse tried to incriminate the queen with this act, because she wanted to secure the succession to the throne for her own children, while Prince Ludwig stood in the way as her stepson. However, the queen was able to successfully face Philip III. defend while De la Brosse was dropped by him. Köhler even suspects that Maria accused Brosse of an attack on her marriage. He was hanged on June 30, 1278 on the gallows at Montfaucon in Paris without any trial and without any explanation .

The fall of Pierre de la Brosse was thematized in medieval poetry France in two poetic works. They were first published in 1835 by Achille Jubinal .

He is also mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy (Purgatorio, Canto VI), where his soul is on the sixth terrace of the Purification Mountain because of its excess.
