Pietà Chapel Oberlaa

Pietà Chapel or Pietà Broad Pillar

The Pietà Chapel , actually a Pietà broad pillar , is a chapel in the 10th  Viennese district of Favoriten , Oberlaa district . It stands at the confluence of Friedhofstrasse (previously called "Hinterezeile") and Oberlaaer Strasse (at no. 8) on the eastern edge of the village.

History and construction

The chapel-like wayside shrine with an almost square floor plan has a barred niche. On the shingle roof there is a two-armed cross with clover-leaf ends and a heart of flames on the lower crossbar ( Herz-Jesu- Doppelkreuz). A Pietà can be seen in the niche . This and the lattice lock bear the year 1877.

An earlier existence of this broad pillar proves a note in the parish chronicle that from 1783 to 1852 there was a poor institute run by the local pastor in Oberlaa as well as elsewhere, whose income came from donations and church collections "from the offering box at the cross under the village" . Apparently the forerunner of today's wayside shrine stood here. No documents are available about its establishment.

On the occasion of the renovation in 1965, which included a small change of location, the niche opening was redesigned and the desolate original shingle roof was replaced by a sheet metal roof. When the wayside shrine was completely destroyed in a truck accident in 1992, a detailed reconstruction was made and the roof was again covered with shingles as before.

Folklore

Every year on April 25th, the St. Mark's procession takes place, during which people pray for a good wine harvest. This procession leads from the Oberlaa parish church over An der Kuhtrift to the Schmerber Cross , on to the Red Cross , to the Pietà chapel and back to the parish church in Oberlaa.
