History and construction

According to legend, the Oberlaa farmer Franz Köppler is said to have escaped a lightning strike in 1772 and to have erected this pillar in gratitude. It was probably named after the vineyard "Schmerbern" .

The Schmerber Cross is a wooden post on a four-sided stone base, held by iron straps, with a lantern and a cast iron crucifix on which Christ is depicted as a child. The inscription reads: "Schmerber-Kreuz Erected by Mr. F. Köppler for happy rescue" . A wheel cross can be seen on the iron band , a flower container, also made of iron, is mounted under the inscription board. The wooden post has a curved sheet metal roof as weather protection.

Folklore

Every year on April 25th, the St. Mark's procession takes place, during which people pray for a good wine harvest. This procession leads from the Oberlaa parish church over An der Kuhtrift to the Schmerber Cross, on to the Red Cross , to the Pietà chapel and back to the parish church in Oberlaa.
