Portrait of Pau de Wandelaers, circa 1730, Albany Institute of History and Art

Vanderlyn immigrated from the Netherlands to New York via Curaçao in 1718 . It is unclear where he was then, probably in Kingston on the Hudson River , 130 km north of New York , or in Albany .

He painted numerous portraits. B. attributed the portraits of the Gansevoort Limner family. Ann Lee Morgan writes that Vanderlyn had his own style, which consisted of "flat patterns, rhythmic contours, and appealing color". The portrait of Pau de Wandelaer (circa 1730, Albany Institute of History and Art) is considered exemplary of his style. It shows a boy with a bird in his hand, in the background the Hudson flows, in short an idyll .

Vanderlyn's last painting dates from 1750. He is the grandfather of the painter John Vanderlyn .
