Life

Pieter van den Broecke was a cloth merchant and traveled with fabrics from Holland to West Africa and Arabia, where he sold them. In 1614 he gave the then governor of Aden two small Haarlem smallen , these were silk fabrics from Haarlem, which were produced on very narrow looms. He then served 17 years until 1630 in the Dutch military of the East India Company in Java , in Arabia, Persia and India . As a farewell, he received a gold chain worth 1,200 guilders .

Pieter van den Broecke is assigned to Frans Hals 'closest circle of friends, as can be seen from the baptismal papers of Hals' daughter Susanna. Van de Broecke was the first godfather at this baptism, and the Haarlem engraver Adrien Jacobsz Mathan has been identified as the second godfather . Frans Hals portrayed Pieter van den Broecke probably in 1633 as a chest portrait in noble clothing with the named gold necklace.

In 1634 he published an account of his life as a traveling salesman in Africa and the Orient . An engraving of the Hals painting, made in 1633 by Adrien Jacobsz Mathan, is depicted on the cover. Van der Broecke is shown in this picture in an oval with coat of arms and dolphin decorations.
