Pietro Bartolo

Pietro Bartolo (born February 10, 1956 in Lampedusa ) is an Italian doctor . He coordinates the medical aid measures for refugees on the island of Lampedusa. He is shown in the documentary Fuocoammare (Sea Fire) . He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019 .

Life

Pietro Bartolo studied medicine at the University of Catania . He specialized in gynecology .

Since 1988 he worked as a doctor on Lampedusa, first for the air forces stationed there, and since 1991 for the population. In 1992 he first looked after refugees who had arrived on the island. In 1993 he was primarily responsible for regional medical care.

Since 2011 he has been the main coordinator for all medical aid measures for refugees on Lampedusa. Pietro Bartolo examined and looked after around 250,000 refugees on Lampedusa.

In 2015 his work was featured in the documentary Fuocoammare . The film received the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2016 . The director Gianfranco Rosi presented the Pietro Bartolo Prize to the residents of Lampedusa for their self-sacrificing support for the refugees. In 2016 his book Lacrime di sale appeared with memories about his work as a doctor on Lampedusa, which was published in German in 2017.

In February 2019 Bartolo joined the small Christian social party Democrazia Solidale (DemoS). According to an agreement between this and the larger Partito Democratico (PD), Bartolo was placed on the PD list for the 2019 European elections in the two constituencies of central Italy and Italian islands (Sicily and Sardinia). He received 135,000 and 139,000 preferential votes and moved into the European Parliament , choosing the constituency islands. He belongs to the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D).
