Pietro Pavesi

Pietro Pavesi (born September 24, 1844 in Pavia , † August 31, 1907 in Asso , Lombardy ) was an Italian politician and naturalist (especially arachnologist , ornithology , limnology , ichthyology ).

Life

Pavesi studied natural sciences at the University of Pavia , where he in 1865 the Laurea acquired with the dissertation Della Struttura in generale dei tipi di animali (On the general structure of the species). A year earlier he published a paper on spiders in the area around Pavia. He then first taught natural sciences at the Lyceum in Lugano . From 1871 he was Professor of Comparative Anatomy in Naples, from 1874 Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy in Genoa and from 1875 in Pavia, where he was Professor of Zoology and from 1876 to 1897 headed the Natural History Museum.

He dealt with many areas, besides arachnology, in which he published with Giovanni Canestrini , with entomology, ornithology, hydrology and ichthyology, history of science (especially about Lazzaro Spallanzani , his predecessor in Pavia), archeology (local history of Pavia). From 1886 to 1902 he published an ornithological calendar. His studies of the fauna in the great lakes of the Italian Alpine foothills and Switzerland made him one of the fathers of limnology in Italy. He also dealt with fish farming and hunting and related laws.

He was on the council of the city of Pavia and from 1899 to 1902 its mayor.
