Pif (comic)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pif the dog ( Pif le chien ) is a cartoon character by José Cabrero Arnal who first appeared in the French newspaper L'Humanité in 1948 . Pif is a slang term for nose in French, comparable to "prongs". The figure was supposed to denounce the injustices of his time, hunger or lack of housing. He had the character of his predecessor Top , who came from the same author and was identified as Pif's father. He is a fictional dog in anthropomorphic form and has the cat Hercules as an antagonist. Pif the Dog's Adventures appeared in the monthly comic magazine Pif Gadget . The newspaper L'Humanité and the weekly magazine L'Humanité Dimanche also published short stories with three or four panels in each issue . In German-speaking countries, the comic strip appeared under the title Pif, the funniest dog in the world and Pif and Hercules in the comic magazine Yps .

Release history

Pif appears for the first time on March 28, 1948 in black and white in the newspaper L'Humanité , then in L'Humanité Dimanche and made its debut in color in the comic magazine Vaillant le journal le plus captivant in 1952 . The newspaper changed its name to 1965 Vaillant le journal de Pif and Pif Gadget in 1969. In the late 1960s Arnal left the show with other artists, among which the famous Louis Cance , François Dimberton , Michel Motti , François Corteggiani , Giorgio Cavazzano and in particular Roger Mas (pseudonym Roger Masmonteils), who was his most important successor.

The comic was also published every three months from 1950 to 1967 and from 1962 in “ pocket book format ” under the title Pif Poche . On July 1, 2004, after the release of the new edition Pif Gadget, he returned as a comic strip by the cartoonist Bernard Ciccolini and the scenario creator Richard Medioni. In September 2005, Olivier Fiquet and François Corteggiani took over .

Original content

Pif the dog lives in a working-class family, which consists of the worker Tonton (Caesar), his wife Tata (Agathe) and the child of the house, Doudou. Pif and Doudou are in great danger of the brutal clay that nothing in the world but the collector and his tyrannical wife fears to be kicked. The brutal cat Hercules wants to process Pif into steak, but Tonton and Tata are also a constant threat to him. Sometimes Hercules wins, sometimes it's Pif. Doudou allies himself with the two animals, plays them off against each other or betrays them both. Tonton and Tata, who fight their own internal conflicts, can also promote other alliances: they can catch Pif or Hercules or fall into their trap, they stand by both, or they play one against all the others.

Hercules

Pif's antagonist Hercules appeared in 1950, two years after his "friend" the dog. Hercules is a black and white, other annoying argumentative cat who has a plaster stuck on his nose and a smile on hungry lips. His role in the comics is that he tries to catch Pif. Depending on the luck of the war, he wins or loses. Over time, Hercules has lost his status as a "villain" and is mostly a close friend of Pif and occasionally argues with him. Eventually they have become friends who feel connected in love-hate or friendship.

Hercules also got its own magazine called Super Hercules , it was a funnier twist on Pif Gadget with lots of jokes and sarcastic humor. It also offered a gadget, but more geared towards fun and wit.

Piffi

In issue 685 of Vaillant is Piffi , the son of Pif first appeared, which was then drawn by Roger Mas. His language is limited to the onomatopoeia "glop glop" (to express satisfaction or approval) and "nix glop" (to express displeasure, rejection or anger).

Film adaptations

Pif was animated in a promotional film for L'Humanité newspaper directed by Julien Pappé .

The animated television series Piff and Hercules ( Pif et Hercules ) was released in 1989, which was shown on RTL Plus from 1991 to 1994 , and a feature film, The New Adventures of Pif and Hercules, in 1993 .
