Pigi ( Greek Πηγή [ piˈʝi ] ( f. Sg. )) Is a local community in the municipality of Arkadi in the municipality of Rethymno on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete .

Pigi is just over nine kilometers east of Rethymno, about two kilometers from the coast and about one kilometer south of Highway 90 . The closest place is Adele about 1.2 kilometers to the west. Agios Dimitrios is about 800 meters southeast, Pigianos Kambos near the coast on the old national road.

history

The earliest mention of Pigi comes from the Venetian period . During the Ottoman period , the place was initially inhabited by Orthodox Christians and Muslims.

The rural community of Pigi (Κοινότητα Πηγής Kinotita Pigis ) was founded in 1925. With the exception of a change of area in the following year and the recognition of Pigianos Kambos in 1981, the rural community consisted of three villages until 1997. Through the implementation of the community reform according to the Kapodistrias program , Pigi was merged with eleven other rural communities to form the municipality of Arkadi (Δήμος Αρκαδίου). This in turn merged into the municipality of Rethymno as part of the administrative reform in 2010 , since then Pigi has had the status of a locality (Τοπική Κοινότητα Topiki Kinotita ).

The public buses of the KTEL network operate daily connections between Amnatos and Rethymno (connections to Kyrianna and Loutra).
