Pilosocereus azulensis is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet indicates the type location in the Pedra Azul National Park.

description

Pilosocereus azulensis grows tree-like or shrubby, branches above the base and reaches heights of up to 10 meters. The smooth, olive-green to blue- green shoots have a diameter of 8 to 9.5 centimeters. There are 6 to 12 ribs, sometimes with transverse furrows. The areoles on it are 5 to 7 millimeters apart. The opaque, slender thorns are yellowish brown. The 1 to 11 ascending to protruding central spines are 0.5 to 4 centimeters long. The 8 to 12 radial spines are 3 to 13 millimeters long. A part of the shoots capable of flowering is hardly pronounced. The flowering areoles are located on 1 to 3 ribs at the tip of the shoots or immediately below. White to gray hairs up to 3 centimeters long arise from them.

The wide-opening flowers are light green on the outside. They are 5.5 to 6.7 inches long and 4.7 to 7 inches in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits reach a diameter of 4.2 to 6 centimeters, tear open laterally and contain a magenta-colored pulp.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus azulensis is distributed in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the Municipio Pedra Azul . The first description was published in 1997 by Nigel Paul Taylor and Daniela Cristina Zappi (* 1965).

Pilosocereus azulensis is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. critically endangered, classified.
