Pilosocereus floccosus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet floccosus means 'full of flakes, flaky, flaky'.

description

Pilosocereus floccosus grows shrubby or tree-shaped with a distinct trunk, is sometimes branched above the base and reaches heights of 1 to 5 meters. The upright, gray-green shoots are finely roughened and have a diameter of 5 to 11 centimeters. There are 4 to 8 ribs. The opaque thorns are initially yellowish brown or reddish and turn gray later. The 3 to 6 ascending to protruding central spines are 0.8 to 2.5 centimeters (rarely up to 5 centimeters) long. The ascending to spreading 5 to 16 radial spines are 2 to 25 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is very distinct. Near the tip of the shoot, it is dense to ring-shaped and cephalic -like. From the areoles there arise 1.5 to 2 centimeters long, light brown or gray, woolly hair and up to 3.5 centimeters long bristles.

The wide-opening flowers are 4 to 5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters. The depressed spherical or laterally compressed fruits have a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters, tear laterally near the base or near its tip and contain a bright red pulp.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Pilosocereus floccosus is common in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It was first described in 1949 by Curt Backeberg and Otto Voll . In 1957 Ronald Stewart Byles and Gordon Douglas Rowley introduced the species to Pilosocereus.

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Pilosocereus floccosus subsp. floccosus
  • Pilosocereus floccosus subsp. quadricostatus

Pilosocereus floccosus and the subspecies Pilosocereus floccosus subsp. floccosus were in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Near Threatened (NT) , d". H. low endangered and the subspecies Pilosocereus floccosus subsp. quadricostatus as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. endangered, classified. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. listed as not endangered and the two subspecies excluded.
