description

Pilosocereus magnificus grows bushy to tree-shaped, can develop a clear trunk and reaches heights of 1.5 to 5 meters. The upright, smooth, light blue shoots are overgrown, slightly woody and have a diameter of 4 to 7.5 centimeters. There are 5 to 12 ribs with clearly visible transverse furrows only near the tip of the shoot. The translucent golden yellow to brown thorns are bristle-like. The 8 protruding central spines are up to 1.5 centimeters long. The approximately 16 ascending radial spines are up to 10 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is only weakly developed. The flowering areoles are scattered in groups of 3 to 6 along the shoots, but mostly in the lower and middle part. There white hairs arise from the areoles.

The narrow, gradually widening flowers are up to 6 centimeters long and 2.3 centimeters in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits have a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters, tear along several longitudinal cracks and contain a magenta-colored pulp.
