Pilosocereus pseudosuperfloccosus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet pseudosuperfloccosus means 'false superfloccosus' and refers to thespecies Pseudopilocereus superfloccosus described in1974 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo (now synonymous with Pilosocereus densiareolatus ).
description
Pilosocereus pseudosuperfloccosus usually grows tree-shaped, has strong candelabra-like branches and reaches heights of up to 6 meters. The lignified trunk has a diameter of up to 20 centimeters. The matt gray-green shoots have a diameter of 9 to 15 centimeters (rarely from 7 centimeters). There are usually eight ribs, flat triangular in cross section, 3 to 4 centimeters wide and 2 to 3 centimeters high. The areoles on it are initially tomentose and later bare. They are about 5 millimeters apart. The resulting needle-like, straight, flexible spines are initially yellowish with a brown base and later gray with a blackish tip. The three to seven straight central spines have a slightly thickened base and are only slightly stronger than the 13 radial spines. These are radially spreading sideways and up to about 10 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is clearly defined and includes about two ribs. From the areoles there emerge abundantly up to 4 centimeters long hair and some 2 to 4 centimeters long, yellowish gray bristles.
The slightly zygomorphic, bare flowers are 7.5 to 8 inches long and can reach a diameter of up to 4.5 inches. The depressed spherical, initially greenish and when ripe purple, bluish frosted fruits are 5 to 7 centimeters wide and 3.5 to 4.5 centimeters high. They contain a bright blood-red, very juicy pulp and burst horizontally.
Distribution and systematics
Pilosocereus pseudosuperfloccosus is distributed in the Brazilian state of Bahia on the east side of the Rio São Francisco near Santa Maria da Vitoria . It was first described in 2009 by Pierre Josef Braun and Eddie Esteves Pereira . Pilosocereus pseudosuperfloccosus is possibly a natural hybrid of Pilosocereus densiareolatus and Pilosocereus pachycladus . In some habitats the species grows together with Pilosocereus densiareolatus , whereby adult plants are easy to confuse. The main differences are the lower number of ribs, the zygomorphic flowers and the red flesh.
