Pilosocereus tuberculatus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tuberculatus comes from Latin , means 'humped' and refers to the humped ribs of the shoots. A common name is "Caxacubri".

description

Pilosocereus tuberculatus grows tree-shaped with an often clearly defined trunk and reaches heights of 2 to 6 meters. In the vicinity of the shoot tips, it branches abundantly, is spread out and up to 6 meters wide. The heavily lignified, upright to crooked, olive-green shoots are 3 to 6 centimeters in diameter and are overgrown when they are young. There are 4 to 6 ribs with conspicuous, crooked transverse furrows. The furrows between the ribs are arched. The piercing, somewhat brittle, protruding thorns are light brown at first and later gray. Of the 3 to 5, 3 to 4.2 centimeters long central spines, the lowest is usually the longest and often curved downwards. The 10 to 12 radiating, downwardly curved radial spines are 4 to 10 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is not pronounced. Areoles capable of flowering are located near the tip of the shoot.

The flowers are 6 to 6.7 inches long and up to 3 centimeters in diameter. The spherical fruits reach a diameter of up to 4 centimeters, tear open at the sides and contain a magenta colored pulp.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

The distribution area of Pilosocereus tuberculatus extends from the northwest to the northeast of the Brazilian state of Bahia and extends to the state of Pernambuco .

The first description as Pilocereus tuberculatus was published in 1933 by Erich Werdermann (1892-1959). Ronald Stewart Byles and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed them in the genus Pilosocereus in 1957 . A synonym is Pseudopilocereus tuberculatus (Werderm.) Buxb.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
