Pilosocereus ulei is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German botanist and explorer Ernst Heinrich Georg Ule . A common name is "Cabeç de Velho".

Pilosocereus ulei grows shrubby to tree-shaped with a clearly defined trunk, branches above the base and reaches heights of up to 5 meters. The upright, gray-green shoots are 9 to 12 centimeters in diameter and are covered with vegetation. There are 6 to 8 ribs. The reddish-brown thorns are translucent when they are young and later turn blackish gray. The single, protruding or sometimes downward central spine is 1.2 to 1.8 inches long. The 8 to 10 spread radial spines are 3 to 10 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is clearly not pronounced and usually includes several ribs near the shoot tips. From the flowering areoles arise stiff, white or gray hair up to 11 centimeters long.

The gradually enlarged flowers are 4.2 to 4.5 centimeters long and 2.7 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits reach a diameter of 2.5 to 3 centimeters, tear at the side or at their base and contain a magenta-colored pulp.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus ulei is distributed in the southeast of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro .

The first description as Pilocereus ulei was published in 1903 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Ronald Stewart Byles and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed them in the genus Pilosocereus in 1957 . A synonym is Pseudopilocereus ulei (K.Schum.) Buxb.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
