Ernst Heinrich Georg Ule (born March 12, 1854 in Halle an der Saale ; † July 15, 1915 in Berlin ) was a Prussian , German botanist and explorer. He was the brother of the geographer Wilhelm Ule . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Ule ".

Life

Ule was a son of the author of popular scientific literature Otto Eduard Vincenz Ule (1820–1876). He first attended the grammar school in Halle and then from 1874 to 1876 the gardening school in Proskau , where he was taught by Paul Sorauer , among others . After graduating from the college, he worked for a short time in the botanical garden in Halle and at the same time attended lectures by Gregor Kraus and J. Kühn. In 1877 Ule went to Berlin to take up a position in the municipal parks and joined the Botanical Association of the Province of Brandenburg. He was further encouraged in his studies by Paul Wilhelm Magnus . In 1877 Ule discovered a previously unknown grass-dwelling smut fungus, which Magnus named "Urocystis Ulii" in his honor. In 1879 he began studying, which he had to drop out. He then stayed in a mental hospital for two years, from which he fled and wandered around for some time. After his recovery, he traveled to Brazil in 1883 , where he was intensively involved in scientific research into the country's crops. After eight years in Blumenau , Santa Catarina , where he worked as a private teacher, among other things, he was appointed Naturalista Viajante of the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro in 1891 . From 1895 to 1900 he was deputy director there and made trips to northern Brazil, as well as to Guyana , Venezuela and Peru . In 1912 he moved back to Berlin.

He wrote valuable publications on Brazil's plant geography and other biological topics, often accompanied by a series of photographs. He also studied the region's economy and wrote, for example, treatises on South America's rubber production .
