The pinnetta ( Italian Capanno ) is a usually round, rural building with a conical roof, which is typical of the shepherds' quarters in Sardinia . In the southeast of the island (former province of Ogliastra ) the buildings are called Barracco.

Depending on the region, the pinnetta can be made entirely of dry brickwork or a waist-high stone wall on which a pointed roof made of wood and reeds rests. Shape and materials are almost identical to the stone huts of the nuragic culture .

Stone domed buildings used in rural areas are also found in Istria and on the Dalmatian Adriatic coast, on Sicily (the Cubburo or Pagghiaru ) and Malta ( Girna ). In Switzerland (in the Poschiavo valley ) they are called Scelé or Crotto . The Menorcan Baracca, the Dammuso in Sicily or Pantelleria , the Apulian Trullo , the Borie and the Cabane in southern France , as well as some very complex stone huts in Portugal were also used for agricultural purposes .
