Pagghiaru of Nardò

Pagghiaru (plur. Pagghiara) is the Sicilian name for a tholos-shaped building, which occurs mainly on the northwest flank of Etna but together with trulli also in Apulia . The name (cf. Italian pagliaro ) means something like straw stack .

description

A pagghiaru is a stone building made of dry stone on a circular floor plan. The entrance is often the only opening in the wall, and there are only rarely small window openings. The Pagghiaru is roofed with a cantilever or false vault . Similar to the Trulli in Apulia and unlike the Cubburo , a similar tholos-shaped building that occurs predominantly in the Monti Nebrodi , the pseudo vault of a Pagghiaru is conical.

Since this type of building occurs mainly on Etna, especially on its northwest flank (in the areas of the municipalities of Bronte , Maletto and Randazzo ), they are usually made of lava rock . They are usually not standing on the bare earth, but on a solidified lava flow.

Similar to the Trulli in Apulia , the Sesi in Pantelleria and the Giren in Malta , the design goes back to prehistoric times. Whether the buildings originally served as dwellings for people or were used for agriculture, e.g. B. as shelters for livestock or for storing agricultural products has not yet been clarified.
