The brush tuft alga ( Vertebrata lanosa ) is a type of red algae that grows as an epiphyte on the knot wrack . It is widespread in the North Atlantic and is also found near Heligoland. The algae extract is used for health and beauty products.

description

The brush tuft alga is an obligate epiphyte on and in the host rod with root-like rhizoids . It forms dark-brown-red, hemispherical, cartilaginous-stiff tufts 3 to 7 centimeters high. The cylindrical-filamentous thallus branches out abundantly, almost forked. The ends of the branches are pointed and forked. In cross-section, the large central siphon cell is surrounded by 12–24 marginal cells, a layer of cortex is missing.

ecology

The brush tuft alga is often infected with the tiny, almost colorless parasitic red alga Choreocolax polysiphoniae , which also belongs to the family Rhodomelaceae and is therefore very closely related.

Occurrence

The brush tuft alga is widespread on the coasts of the North and Northeast Atlantic from Iceland to Spain and in the North Sea . It is also found on the Atlantic coast of North America . In the North Sea, it has been found near Heligoland, among other places .

The brush tuft algae only grows as an epiphyte on larger algae, especially on the knotted wrack ( Ascophyllum nodosum ), rarely also on bladder wrack ( Fucus vesiculosus ). It never grows directly on rock; Specimens that seem to settle on stone always arise on closer inspection from the remains of old seaweed stalks.

Systematics

The first scientific description was made in 1767 by Carl von Linné under the name Fucus lanosus (In: Systema naturae II, p. 718). In 1931 she was assigned to another genus as Polysiphonia lanosa . Tyge Ahrengot Christensen placed it in 1967 in the genus Vertebrata .

Synonyms are Ceramium Fastigiatum Roth , Conferva omissa Gunnerus , Fucus lanosus L. , Hutchinsia fastigiata (Roth) C.Agardh , Polysiphonia fastigiata (Roth) Greville , Polysiphonia lanosa (L.) Tandy and Vertebrata fastigiata S.F.Gray .

use

The brush tuft algae contains several bromophenols that act as powerful cellular antioxidants . It also has anti-tumor properties. The algae extract is used in numerous health and beauty products.

The algae are either harvested directly by hand at low tide or are a by-product of the harvest of knotted wrack .
