Piteälvsbron (German: Piteälven Bridge) is a combined rail and road bridge and a stopping point on the Inland Railway in Sweden .

Geographical location

The bridge crosses the Piteälven about 13 km north of the Moskosel train station at a distance of 136,350 kilometers . The Länsväg BD 638 leads over the bridge . It is located in the province of Norrbotten County .

Description of the structure

The bridge is 90 m long. Its abutments and the central pillar are made of granite ; the latter stands on a concrete slab that was placed on the rocky ground. The resting two bridge segments of 45 m length as the girder in steel - truss executed.

At both approaches to the bridge, the road and track will be merged into one lane. On the street side this is secured as a level crossing , on the track side by a signal . Both security systems are switched dependent on each other. While the bridge was previously secured by its own bridge keeper, today a train has to stop and a member of the train crew triggers the road-side closure from a stationary console. The bridge keeper's house has been preserved and is now used privately as a holiday home.

history

The substructure of the bridge was bricked up in the winter of 1932/33, and the two bridge segments were added in 1935. The bridge belongs to the section of the Inlandsbahn that was the last to be completed. It has been in regular service since August 7, 1937 .

As a road bridge, the bridge now serves only local traffic. The main part of the road traffic today uses the bridge of the E 45 about 6 km downstream and to the east .

The Piteälvsbron is now one of the two bridges that remained in the wake of the inland railway, on which mixed road and rail traffic takes place. The other bridge still in operation is the Mankellbron .
