Pitfour Castle

Pitfour Castle is a mansion in the Scottish village of St Madoes in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Pitfour estate has been occupied since 1600. At that time there was a tower house of a laird , of which no traces are visible today. According to a description, it was probably a few hundred meters away from today's mansion near the banks of the Tay . Pitfour Castle was built in 1784 to a design by the Scottish architect Robert Adam . In the course of a revision in 1825 a library and a music room were added according to a William Burns plan . Furthermore, the tower of the stables was raised. In 1964 the entrance area, which had been redesigned by Burn, was returned to its original state according to the original plans. The east wing fell victim to a fire in July 1969.

description

Pitfour Castle stands on the southeast edge of St Madoes'. Its masonry is made of quarry stone with natural stone details set off from the sandstone . The three-story corps de logis is designed with round corner towers and partially with pseudo-reinforcement. A rounded tower with crenellated reinforcement emerges on the east side. On the north side are the one-story stables. In the interior, a staircase with a glass dome should be mentioned, which Antonio Zucchi was involved in designing . The stucco work is rather simple.
