Pitons
The Pitons Management Area is an area in the southwest of the island of St. Lucia , a few kilometers south of the town of Soufrière .
The approximately 3000 hectare protected area includes:
- The Caldera Qualibou with several later volcanic domes and the
- two cooled volcanic cores , the 770 and 743 m high Pitons ( Gros Piton and Petit Piton ; Gros Piton is the more southern and slightly higher of the two peaks),
- a geothermal field with sulfur fumaroles and thermal springs ( Sulfur Springs ) as well
- tropical rainforest, subtropical rainforest, dry forest depending on the altitude zone and
- a marine area with species-rich coral reefs.
The area is both because of the numerous, sometimes rare species, its geological diversity and because of the scenic beauty since 2004 on the list of UNESCO - World Heritage Site .
