Pittulie Castle , also Pitullie Castle , is the ruin of a residential tower about 800 meters east of Pitsligo Castle in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire . The rectangular tower house is believed to date from the late 16th century and W. Douglas Simpson refers to it as one of the Nine Castles of the Knuckle , indicating the rocky headland on the northeastern Aberdeenshire coast on which it stands.
history
Today's Niederungsburg probably replaced an earlier castle at this point. It is thought that the castle was built on the occasion of the marriage of Alexander Fraser and Margaret Abernethy from Saltoun in 1596. This marriage resulted in the Frasers inheriting the Saltouns title . The Cumines bought the property and expanded it. Sir William Forbes bought it towards the end of the 18th century but gave it up.
description
The castle consists of a rectangular block with a square tower on the northeast corner. There are two corner turrets that are remarkably low, on the gables to the northeast and southwest. The main block has two full floors and an attic. The main staircase only leads to the first floor. From the knight's hall there , a spiral staircase in a turret provides access to the top. Another spiral staircase in a turret, which leads out from the 2nd floor, provides access to the higher floors. Originally the entrance was on the north facade.
Pittulie Castle is a Scheduled Monument .
