history
Southwest of Sandhaven, near Peathill , a stone or bronze age cairn testifies to the early settlement of the area. At Rosehearty are the ruins of Pitsligo Castle . The castle, begun in the 15th century, was gradually expanded in the following centuries. The lands to the east had belonged to the Fraser clan since the 14th century . The clan built Pittulie Castle there in the 16th to 17th centuries, which is now in ruins .
The port of Sandhaven was established in 1840. Boats are still made there today.
Between 1961 and 1981 the population of Sandhaven rose from 695 to 924. Then it dropped back to 706 by 2001. In the 2011 census survey, 820 people lived in Sandhaven.
