features

General

The beetles are 1.8 to 2.5 millimeters long and have a light brown cylindrical body. The throat plate is provided with a front rim fine humps, evenly curved, with dotted base and hidden when viewed from above the head. The base of the pronotum is unrimmed. It has a smooth, flat longitudinal callus at the back. Seen from below, the tip edge of the elytra is simple, immediately surrounding the abdomen . The sutural teeth are clearly visible. The wing covers are wider than long up to the sutural teeth. The abdomen remains straight from the second sternite towards the end. The third tarsal link is cylindrical in shape.

Sexual dimorphism

  • Male animal : The second tooth on the fall is a large hook tooth. There are two small teeth between the hook tooth and the large conical tooth.
  • Female animal : The forehead is covered with a triangular patch of short hair, with faint furrows next to it. Only small bumps can be found on the fall.

distribution

The species is common in Mediterranean countries .

Way of life

Pityogenes calcaratus occurs on Aleppo pine ( Pinus halapensis ) and occasionally on maritime pine ( Pinus pinaster ), black pine ( Pinus nigra ) and snake skin pine ( Pinus leucodermis ). It colonizes the bark of the trees. The feeding pattern shows a ramming chamber from which five to seven irregular mother tunnels branch off in a star shape. The animals are polygamous .
