Life

Kreuzer studied theater studies , German literature , library studies and philosophy at the universities in Basel , Freiburg , Göttingen and Tübingen . 1956 doctorate he in Tübingen at Paul Kluckhohn about the tragedies Friedrich Hebbel , 1960, he was a research assistant of Fritz Martini at the former Technical University in Stuttgart , where he met with a ground-breaking study on in 1965 Bohème , a contribution to the subculture research avant la lettre, habilitated . Further stations in his career were the literary professorships at the universities in Saarbrücken (1967) and then Bonn (1970), where he was appointed to the renowned chair for literary studies (succeeding Benno von Wieses ).

As early as the early 1960s, Kreuzer saw the limitation of the literary subject area to the aesthetically beautiful and high work of art as too restrictive. He called for an expansion of the spectrum of literary studies by including the trivial in literature, the mass readings of the 19th century, scientifically neglected areas and forgotten authors, the electronic mass media in the 20th century and the expansion of literary research to include film and television and radio . Together with Rul Gunzenhäuser , Wolfgang Haubrichs and Wolfgang Klein , he founded the Zeitschrift für Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik (LiLi) in 1970 , which since then has served as a quarterly publication for these developments. Until the 1990s, Kreuzer was the editor in charge of more than 20 themed issues.

When Kreuzer went to the new University of Siegen as a founding senator and professor for German studies and literary studies in 1972 , he campaigned for the institutionalization of literary media studies in Germany and established the interdisciplinary research focus on mass communication and media in Siegen . He was the initiator of the Research Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, co-founder of the Collaborative Research Center “Screen Media” and maintained lively contacts with universities and scientists all over the world. In addition, the book series series Q. Quellentexte zur literary and cultural history , series Q. New series , series Siegen , published in part with other colleagues such as Wolfgang Drost , Wolfgang Raible , Brigitte Schlieben-Lange and Christian W. Thomsen . Editions and discoveries . Contributions to literary and linguistic and media studies and research on the literary and cultural history of Kreuzer's productivity in the Siegen years. Kreuzer has supervised or edited more than one hundred publications in the last four series of technical textbooks alone - which also included pioneering appointments to what was then Department 3 - Linguistics and Literature (including Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht , K. Ludwig Pfeiffer , Karl Riha , Siegfried J . Schmidt ) fall. Even after his retirement (1992), Kreuzer remained active in research for years.

In addition to his academic work and his institutional merits, Helmut Kreuzer is remembered by numerous colleagues and students worldwide as extraordinarily helpful, caring and indulgent, intellectually curious and academically liberal.

Since 1953 Helmut Kreuzer was with the literary scholar and art historian Ingrid Kreuzer born. Oßmann (1926-2004) married, who also appeared as a narrator under the pseudonym Angelika Jakob .
