Wolfgang Raible

Wolfgang Raible (born March 1, 1939 ) is a German linguist ( Romance studies , general linguistics ).

After graduating from Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Stuttgart, he studied classical philology, philosophy and Romance studies in Kiel, Innsbruck, Poitiers and Salamanca from 1958. The doctorate (spatial concept in Aristotelian physics, 1965 in Kiel) was Graecist , the habilitation (text linguistics; 1971 in Cologne as assistant to Harald Weinrich ) was Romanceist.

He turned down the first call for a full professorship at Duisburg University in 1972, and accepted further calls (in 1975 Siegen University , 1978 University of Freiburg ).

In 1985 he founded the Collaborative Research Center “Transitions and areas of tension between orality and writing” in Freiburg . Since 1986 he has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . His awards include the Baden-Württemberg State Research Prize ( 1990) and the Leibniz Prize (1992). In Freiburg he supervised almost 50 doctorates and post-doctoral degrees.

His students include Hartwig Kalverkämper (HU Berlin), Ralph Ludwig (U Halle), Trudel Meisenburg (U Osnabrück), Maria Selig (U Regensburg), Thomas Haye (U Göttingen), Heiner Böhmer (U Dresden), Claudia Riehl (LMU) Munich), Damaris Nübling (U Mainz), Doris Tophinke (U Paderborn), Barbara Job (U Bielefeld), Johannes Niehoff-Panagiotidis (FU Berlin), Juan Carlos Palazuelos Montecinos (U Adolfo Ibañez, Chile), Alfonso Gallegos Shibya (U Guadalajara, México) and Sibylle Kriegel-Haase (U Aix-en-Provence). Raible has retired since April 2007 .
