The Pitztal Bridge is a road bridge in the Upper Inn Valley east of Imst in Tyrol . It spans the Inn , the Arlbergbahn  and the access to the Imst-Pitztal train station (Brennbichlstraße L61). The Pitztalstrasse (L16), which connects the Pitztal to the Tiroler Strasse (B171) and the Inntal Autobahn  (A12), runs over it.

history

Before the bridge was built, the access to the Pitztal was a bottleneck, the road led around 50 meters in altitude from the Tiroler Straße to the bottom of the valley and on the other side through the Arzler Wald again steep and winding. With increasing traffic, the desire for faster and safer access to the valley and the glacier ski area at the head of the valley, which opened in 1983, grew . In a two-year construction period, the bridge was built according to plans by Mayreder, Kraus & Co. and opened on September 24, 1983 with around 6,000 visitors. The construction costs amounted to around 50 million schillings.

Building

The 220 m long arched bridge was one of the first in Tyrol to be erected using cantilever construction. The reinforced concrete arch has a span of 169 m and a pitch of 32.5 m. It was concreted in sections and suspended using auxiliary guy lines. The roadway is elevated with supports on the arch. At the time of construction, the Pitztal Bridge was the largest bridge in Europe built using this method.
