Pyotr Ivanovich Sokolov

Peter Ivanovich Sokolov ( Russian Пётр Иванович Соколов * June 24 . Jul / 5. July  1764 greg. In Moscow , † 1835 ) was a Russian philologist and university teacher .

Life

Sokolow studied at the Academia Slavo - Graeco - Latina, founded in 1687 . in Moscow. In 1783 he was admitted to high school at Moscow University , where he received his master's degree in 1784 . In 1786 he was appointed teacher of the Russian language at the grammar school. As a student he was part of the administration of the Russian Academy and was involved in the work of the Academy. He wrote an introduction to Russian grammar and translated ancient classics such as The Odyssey .

Sokolov's fellow student and long-term colleague was Dmitri Michailowitsch Sokolow (1786-1819). Both Sokolows became Academy candidates in 1792 and members of the Academy in 1793. In the same year they each received a gold medal for their work in creating the Academy dictionary. In 1802 they wrote a Russian grammar under the observation of Metropolitan Gavriil and the participation of Archpriest Krassowski. In 1802 Pyotr Sokolov became secretary of the academy and remained so until his death. In addition, he was the editor of Sankt-Peterburgskije Vedomosti , member of the main administration of schools and the study committee, editor of the journal of the department of popular education and head of the academy printing house. As librarian in the 1st department of the academy, he cataloged the books and manuscripts . In 1835 he received the Demidow Prize .

From 1800 to 1825, Sokolov worked as a teacher of Russian grammar, logic and rhetoric at the School of Naval Architecture in St. Petersburg , which later became the Naval Engineering Institute .
