20 Minuten Radio (formerly Planet 105 ) is a Swiss youth radio. It has been broadcasting in the cable network throughout German-speaking Switzerland since 1998 and was founded under the name Radio 105. Since November 27, 2019, it has been called 20 Minuten Radio.

The station is considered to be the first regional youth radio in Switzerland . Since September 9, 2009, Planet 105 can also be received in the Zurich region via VHF and is now moderated almost continuously on weekdays. Until this date, the station was located in Muttenz . For this reason, “Radio 105” is only partially considered a regional language youth radio, because the FM license for coverage area 25 (City of Zurich) has given the station an explicit service mandate from the Federal Office of Communication for the City of Zurich. Today the broadcasts are from the studios on Hottingerstrasse near the Kunsthaus. According to the company, Radio 105 is a politically and religiously neutral radio station.

In addition to broadcasting via VHF, the radio station operates special-interest channels such as Ibiza Lounge and Ibiza Club that can be received exclusively via the Internet . The station was operated by Music First Network AG , founded by Giuseppe Scaglione until 2014 , and is a Swiss branch of the Italian station Radio 105 Network. When the Music First Network had to file for bankruptcy in 2014, the future of youth radio was uncertain. It ran endlessly until Roger Schawinski bought Radio 105 in one process and now operates it together with Radio 1 . Radio 105 was renamed Radio 20 Minuten in December 2019.

Financial difficulties in 2014

On January 13, 2014, Music First Network AG, which is responsible for the operation of Radio 105, announced that the bankruptcy judge had been informed of the company's over-indebtedness. According to media reports, attempts to sell the company to interested parties in Germany and Switzerland had previously failed. Furthermore, the main investor Finelco , a stake in RCS MediaGroup led by Alberto Hazan - the company owns Radio 105 in Italy - withdrew from Radio 105 in Switzerland. A bankruptcy of Music First Network AG could mean the end for Radio 105. Most recently, Swiss media entrepreneurs, including Roger Schawinski , were interested in taking over the station. At that time, Radio 105 had around 20 employees.

On January 18, 2014, Radio 1 announced that its owner, Roger Schawinski, had received the bid for Radio 105 from the bankruptcy administrator of Music First Network AG and had signed the agreement on the over-the-counter sale of the station. The losing bidders would now have a few days to submit a better offer. After that, Roger Schawinski would have the opportunity to outbid a higher offer. A takeover would then have to be approved by the Federal Office of Communications. The rival rival for Radio 105 is the Radio Energy Group ( Energy Zurich , Energy Bern , Energy Basel ), a joint venture between the Swiss media group Ringier and the French NRJ Group .

In a further legal dispute with the Radio 105 Network in Italy, the organizer renamed the station to Planet 105. The evening show with Dino Giglio and DJ M-Live also had to be renamed from Planet 105 to Dino Surpreme Show . At the same time, Planet 105 published a new logo, the two new internet stations and a new app for reception with mobile internet devices.

Takeover by Tamedia

The youth channel Planet 105 (formerly Radio 105) has been distributed by 20min.ch (Tamedia Groupe) since November 25, 2019.

Tamedia, which also includes 20 Minuten, integrates the youth channel Planet 105 from Radio 1 into “20 Minuten Music”. The aim is to strengthen and further develop the online music radio of 20 Minuten, launched in 2017, by means of additional broadcasting via FM and DAB + as well as expanding the editorial offering.

The moderation and editorial team of Planet 105 will oversee the operation of the station on behalf of Tamedia and, in cooperation with the 20-minute editorial team, produce the journalistic contributions and curate the music. Instead of traditional news formats, listeners are to be offered a varied program of shows, podcasts and instant news flashes with current stories over 20 minutes.

Most successful Swiss youth radio

Planet 105 has been able to increase its daily number of listeners from 70,000 to 100,000 in the last few years. With the integration in 20 minutes, Planet 105 will now be available via all online channels of the largest Swiss media brand Tamedia.
