The Central Thuringia planning region is a unit of spatial planning in central Thuringia . The participating municipalities work together in the regional planning community for Central Thuringia based in Weimar.

The planning region Central Thuringia borders in the north on the planning region North Thuringia , in the east on the planning region East Thuringia and in the south and west on the planning region Southwest Thuringia . In the northeast it borders on the state of Saxony-Anhalt . It is one of the economically strongest planning regions in Eastern Germany. According to the system of central locations, it consists of the upper center Erfurt, the medium-sized centers with partial function of a regional center Gotha and Weimar, the medium-sized centers Apolda, Arnstadt, Ilmenau and Sömmerda, as well as seven small and 28 sub-centers.

The planning regions in Thuringia were created in 1991 on the basis of the Thuringian State Planning Act (ThLPlG). Regional development concepts based on the guidelines for promoting regional development have been financially supported with state funds since 1998.
