The platinum hatchetfish ( Thoracocharax securis ) is a fish from the Amazon and its right-hand tributaries. It is the largest species of the hatchet-bellied tetra (Gasteropelecidae) and lives in shallow bays of white water rivers on the surface of the water where it hunts insects. The platinum hatchetfish is said to be able to jump 10 meters in length, with its pectoral fins whirring like a bird's wing.

The platinum hatchetfish can grow to be 6.7 to nine centimeters long. Older animals are often as tall as they are long. In front of the dorsal fin , its back profile is almost straight. The dorsal fin is supported by 13 to 16 fin rays, the long anal fin by 38 to 42. The base of the anal fin is covered by five to six yellow-brown to olive-colored, silvery, shiny rows of scales. The pectoral fins are elongated and extend beyond the base of the dorsal fin. The fins are colorless, only the dorsal fin has a dark spot on the front edge. A band extends from the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin, which shimmers bluish to greenish in the sunlight. Gender differences are not known.
Keeping in the aquarium
The platinum hatchet belly can be kept in aquariums with at least 350 to 400 liters of water, whereby tanks with a shallower depth and a large water surface are preferable. The water temperature should be between 25 ° C and 30 ° C, the pH value between 5.5 and 7.5 and the carbonate hardness of the water should be set between 3 ° dKH and 16 ° dKH. The fish can be kept well with peaceful small and medium-sized South American cichlids. Small insects should be given as food. This fish is an excellent jumper, so the aquarium should be covered and the distance between the water level and the aquarium lid should be ten centimeters or more.
