Valentin Gezow ( Bulgarian Валентин Гецов , English transcription Valentin Getsov ; born March 14, 1967 in Russe ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler . He won a silver free style lightweight medal at the 1992 Olympics.

Career

Valentin Gezow started for the Levski / Spartak Sofia sports club and was trained by G. Stoitchkow. He wrestled exclusively in free style and throughout his entire career in lightweight (at that time up to 68 kg body weight).

It was difficult for Gezow to assert himself in Bulgaria, as there was an oversupply of world class wrestlers in his home country in his weight class. Names like Simeon Schterew , Kamen Penew , Angel Sirakow and Nikolai Kasabow attest to this. Gezow was therefore only used in six international championships during his career, and he won medals in four of these events.

He made his debut at the 1990 European Championships in Poznan . He came in only 5th place behind Fevzi Şeker from Turkey , Georg Schwabenland from Germany , Abdulla Magomedow from the USSR and Giorgios Athanasiadis from Greece .

Then he started again at the 1991 World Cup in Varna . In the final, he lost his pools against the multiple world and Olympic champion Arsen Fadsajew from the USSR clearly with 0:13 techn. Points. In the fight for the bronze medal, he met Georg Schwabenland , whom he narrowly scored 2-0 techn. Could defeat points, with which he secured this medal.

At the 1992 European Championships in Kaposvár he lost in the final battle of his pool against the 1989 world champion Boris Budayev from the USSR. But he was able to prevail again in the battle for the bronze medal and beat Kullo Koiv from Estonia on points. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Valentin Gezow achieved the greatest success of his career. He fought his way up to the final, in which he again had nothing to order against Arsen Fadsayev and lost on points (1:13 technical points). But winning the silver medal made up for this defeat.

In 1993 he started again at the European Championships in Istanbul . But he could no longer build on the successes of recent years and only reached 10th place. After that he was not used by the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation at any international championships.
