The Balaton is a reservoir about 840 meters west and upstream from the Zweribachwasserfälle in natural area Central Black Forest . It was created in 1924 as an upper basin for the Zweribachwerk near Zinken Obertal by Simonswald . It dams the Zweribach , which flows two kilometers further east into the Wilde Gutach , and a smaller tributary called Harzmoosbach. The reservoir is mainly located in the municipality of Simonswald in the district of Emmendingen , the southern part in the area of the municipality of St. Peter in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald . The outlet pipe reaches the power plant in a north-easterly direction in the Zinken Obertal of Simonswald, this part of the discharge then also flows into the Wilde Gutach over a kilometer below the Zweribach.
