The Plattjen is a mountain above Saas-Fee and Saas-Almagell . With a height of 2,571 m above sea level. M it is clearly dominated by the other mountains of the Saas Valley . Strictly speaking, it is only a small elevation on the northern shoulder of the Egginer massif. It is better known for the Plattjenbahn that leads to its summit.

The elevation is characterized by its rugged nature. On larger areas, boulders protrude from the ground, often with a plate shape (see picture). Hence the name is derived. Due to its lower altitude and its location, it is very exposed in terms of weather.

Cable car to Plattjen with Berghaus Plattjen

In 1999, the Plattjenbahn from 1963, which had previously had a rather low capacity due to its 2-person cabins, was rebuilt. A modern single-cable gondola lift with 6-seater gondola cabins was built within 7 months. At the same time, the civic community took the opportunity to build a restaurant on the building of the previous mountain station. A snow-making system was installed up to the mountain station in 1998. A 2-seater chairlift that previously existed in the upper section was demolished.

With just this cable car and - apart from the forest path in the lower part - only one descent, the Plattjen ski area is the smallest and, at 2,571 m, the lowest ski area in Saas-Fee, thanks to its north-east location and in the shadow of the 3,370 m high Egginer, with little sunshine, it offers the advantages of high snow reliability and the view of the rock face of Dom (4,545 m), Täschhorn (4,491 m) and Lenzspitze (4,294 m).
