Platystethus is a genus of beetles from the family of the short-winged (Staphylinidae) within the subfamily Omaliinae . It occurs in Europe with 17 species, 9 of which also occur in Central Europe.

features

The beetles look very similar to those of the genus Oxytelus . However, they have only simple, transverse basal furrows on the tergites on the abdomen, their head is usually only separated from the pronotum by a scratched transverse line and is rarely pinched off and the top of the body is hairless. The latter also distinguishes the genus from Haploderus . The head of the male is significantly wider than that of the female and also has longer temples. It often has two thorns in the male.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals live in dung, which the larvae also feed on, or in mud on the banks of water.
