The Square of the Victims of National Socialism is a green area on the edge of Munich's old town .

location

The square is located at the northern end of Maximiliansplatz and forms the connection to Brienner Straße . It is part of the Munich Altstadtring , which is continued here with the Oskar-von-Miller-Ring. The square is diagonally opposite the former Wittelsbacher Palais , which was the headquarters and prison of the Munich Gestapo from 1933 to 1945.

"It was a place of annihilation, intimidation and terror against politically dissenters, against racially and religiously discredited minorities and against people who were persecuted because of their sexual orientation or their disabilities."

In the nearby Maxvorstadt , the NSDAP maintained numerous administrative institutions in the representative party quarter. Martial parades and propaganda mass rallies took place on Königsplatz . Since 1931 the party headquarters of the NSDAP, the "Brown House", was located between Karolinenplatz and Königsplatz .

“At this historical location ... the newly built NS Documentation Center was opened in 2014 . ... It anchors the memory of the Nazi era topographically in the city and at the same time offers space for a critical examination of the ... former "capital of the movement". "

history

Its name in 1946 - only one year after the end of National Socialism - caused great resentment in the population, which even led to the destruction of the street sign. No postal addresses were deliberately assigned to the place. Until 1985 there was a memorial stone on the square dedicated to "The Victims in the Resistance to National Socialism". It was designed from granite by Karl Oppenrieder . Today it is located on Freedom Square in the Neuhausen district . After a lengthy discussion about a visual upgrade of the square and an accompanying "dignified remembrance", the Munich city council approved renovation measures in April 2012. The newly designed Square of the Victims of National Socialism was opened to the public on January 27, 2014 after Mayor Christian Ude had laid a wreath .

The monument to the victims of Nazi tyranny , a column with an eternal flame , has been located on the square since 1985 . Since 1995 there has been a memorial stone embedded in the lawn commemorating the murdered Munich Sinti and Roma . Since the renovation work, which was completed in 2014, there has been an 18.5 meter long and 1.30 meter high bronze plaque behind the eternal flame with the inscription "In memory of the victims of the National Socialist tyranny".
