Plaxo, Inc. is a Californian company founded in July 2001 by Sean Parker - one of the co-founders of the music exchange platform Napster -, Minh Nguyen, Todd Masonis and Cameron Ring , which provides social network services and software for the decentralized management of networked online address books offers.

Plaxo, Inc. operates out of Mountain View , California. The company has been cooperating with AOL since July 2005 and integrating services for AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM). Plaxo had around 15 million users in October 2006.

In early 2008, Plaxo was taken over by Comcast Interactive Media. On October 1, 2017, Plaxo informed its customers that it would cease business operations on December 31, 2017. However, the customer data could easily be transferred to other providers.

Services

The service offers automatic updating of contact information via the provider's server. The contact details and the address book of the registered user are stored on Plaxo's servers. Upon request, Plaxo will send an email to selected entries with the request to update your own contact details. The contact details of registered Plaxo users can be updated automatically; for users who are not registered, these emails are sent with a request for a correction.

The Plaxo address book can be viewed online worldwide, but the service also offers plug-ins for all common e-mail and address programs such as Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird and the address book of Mac OS X. Other applications can be accessed through a programming interface (API).

criticism

Plaxo is also criticized by data protectionists because of the collection and the uncomplicated exchange of address data. However, according to its own information, Plaxo has suspended plans to earn money by passing on contact details.
