Plaza de la Constitución

The Plaza de la Constitución , also known as Plaza Matriz is a place in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo .

It is located in the Barrio Ciudad Vieja . The most important street of the district, the pedestrian zone of Calle Sarandí , leads south past the Plaza de la Constitución . In the early years of the history of the then fortified city of San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo , the central square of the city , called Plaza Mayor, was located there since 1726 at the topographically highest point of Montevideo at that time . Pedro Millán was responsible for its construction. The name and the meaning of the square changed in the course of the further historical development in which Montevideo began to grow beyond the area of Ciudad Vieja . The Plaza de la Constitución was the scene of a central event in the history of the State of Uruguay. The so-called Jura de la Constitución (constitutional oath) took place here on July 18, 1830, the day the first constitution was passed in the context of Uruguay's independence . The design of the square and the first plantings were carried out in 1855 by José Pedro Margat . The Plaza de la Constitución, in the middle of which there is a fountain inaugurated on July 18, 1871, created by the Italian Juan Ferrari (1836-1918), is crossed on the north side by Calle Rincón, which runs parallel to Sarandí , and to the west and east the streets of Calle Ituzaingó and Calle Juan Carlos Gómez are bordered. The Iglesia Matriz , the cathedral of Montevideo , was built in 1790 on the west side . Next to it is the Museo Gurvich . On the opposite east side is the Cabildo , the former town hall of Montevideo from colonial times, built in 1804, with the Museo y Archivo Histórico Municipal . The square has been classified as the Monumento Histórico Nacional since 1975 .
