The Pleurotremataceae are a family of sac fungi that alone form the order Dyfrolomycetales .

features

The Pleurotremataceae have spherical, leathery perithecia or perithecia-like papillary fruiting bodies as fruiting bodies, which grow individually or in a gregarious manner and are mostly sunk in the substrate. They are spherical to shield-shaped, in a vertical section also almost pear-shaped and provided with an opening ( ostiolum ), which in the genus Melomastia has periphyses (hair-like structures). The peridia consists of two or more layers. The numerous paraphyses are thread-like and curved. The tubes are eight-pore, thick-walled, bitunicate , with short stems, rounded at the tip and provided with an inamyloid ring. The spores are arranged in a row, egg-shaped to broadly fusiform, translucent , double to multiple septate and sometimes have a gelatinous skin. Of the Monoblastiales they differ in the nichtlichenisierten fruiting bodies that hyphenähnlichen paraphyses and translucent, often septate spores. The cherry stone iotheliaceae in contrast have brown, simply septate spores and a secondary fruit shape

Way of life

The known species of the Pleurotremataceae live in very different habitats : Species of the genus Dyfrolomyces are saprobic in aquatic or marine habitats, Melomastia species live saprobically on branches of different species, Pleurotrema species also live saprobically on plant material in terrestrial and aquatic habitats.

Systematics and taxonomy

The position of the family and the individual genera was very controversial until 2017. The Pleurotremataceae were described as a family by Walter Watson as early as 1929 , the order Dyfrolomycetales with the only family Dyfrolomycetaceae, however, not until 2013 by Ka-Lai Pang , Kevin David Hyde and Evan Benjamin Gareth Jones , in order to classify the marine species of the Dothideomycetes. However, Maharachchikumbura and co-workers then recognized in 2016 that the family of the Dyfrolomycetaceae are only a synonym of the Pleurotremataceae and at the same time excluded the Pleurotremataceae from the family that had previously belonged to the class Sordariomycetes . The type genus is pleurotrema . The orders Acrospermales and Strigulales are closely related to the Dyfrolomycetales.
