Pliny is an impact crater on the northeastern front of the moon , between Mare Serenitatis and Mare Tranquillitatis in the south. To the northwest of Pliny the Montes Haemus end in the foothills of the Promontorium Archerusia . A system of lunar grooves , the Rimae Plinius , run from there in a northeastern direction.
The crater has pronounced terracing and a central mountain inside.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder .
