Plinthisus brevipennis is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .

features

The bugs are 2.8 to 3.5 millimeters long. The small, shiny black animals have a rather flattened physique. Her head is narrow and appears partially sunk into the body. The pronotum has a wide, dotted band at the rear edge. The animals have a number of longer, scattered hairs, about one each on the head and one on the rails ( tibia ) of the front legs. The bugs usually have shortened (brachyptere) hemielytras .

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed from western North Africa across the Mediterranean and western and central Europe to southern Scandinavia and east via central and southern Russia to the Caucasus and the Caspian region. It is widespread in Germany and usually not uncommon. In Austria it is probably just as widespread, but so far only documented in the west and south. In Great Britain it is local in much of the south and rare further north. Warm, dry to moderately moist, open habitats and coniferous and deciduous forests that are not too dense are settled. The species does not seem to have any soil preferences, although there are many finds on sandy soils.

Way of life

The animals live in the litter , which they hardly leave. During the mating season in May, the adults can very rarely be observed on plants while they suckle on maturing seeds. The more macroporous individuals can fly. The adults overwinter in the litter under trees, in moss and grass clusters or under loose bark. The females lay their eggs in the ground. From the end of July you can meet the adults of the new generation. One generation is trained every year.
