Live and act

Alexander von der Nahmer was the son of the procurator Wilhelm von der Nahmer (1792-1834), who worked at the Hesse-Nassau Higher Appeal Court , and Franziska Clementine Schenk (1802-1865). The early death of his father prevented von der Nahmer from studying; he autodidactically acquired knowledge in the field of iron and steel processing .

In Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hütte near Troisdorf , he was employed as operations director in the 1850s, where he managed the rolling mill. He married Susanne Luise Bayer (1827–1901) from Darmstadt in Wiesbaden in 1857 .

Because of a job advertisement from the export merchants Gebr. Böker in Remscheid, von der Nahmer moved there in 1862. The rolling mill company and steam grinding company of the Böker Brothers had to accept heavy losses in the past. The former company was liquidated and renamed the trading company “Gebr. Böker und Alexander von der Nahmer ”was re-established at the Wendung in Remscheid. Alexander von der Nahmer did not have any great fortune by default, after all, his capital contribution to the joint company consisted of 10,000 thalers. He was appointed sole commercial and technical director. His efforts to reorganize the company were successful, and it was able to make a profit in its third business year.

The company was converted into the stock corporation " Bergische-Stahl-Industrie AG " and he was appointed technical director. His son Wilhelm (1858-1938) became the second director, but his position was taken in 1875 by Moritz Böker . After disagreements with Böker became more frequent in the 1880s, von der Nahmer decided to set up his own factory in 1884. This work should also secure the future of his second son Adolf (1866-1939). In November 1885 the “ Alexanderwerk A. von der Nahmer. Steel, iron u. Metal foundry, machine, tool and Armaturen-Fabrik “started production. Until the death of Alexander von der Nahmer in 1888, father and son managed the plant together.
