The road branches off to the northeast about 12 km north of Steppes from the Lake Highway and reaches the west bank of Arthur's Lake at Flintstone . From there it leads north through the Central Plateau Conservation Area in the central highlands and through the settlement of Cramps on the east bank of the Great Lake to Mount Blackwood in the Great Western Tiers . There the Poatina Road turns to the east and leads in several serpentines down to Poatina at the foot of the mountains. From Poatina the road continues east and northeast until it meets Cressy Road south of Cressy.
