The female is clearly longitudinally striped, it shows a broad green central band on the back with two light side stripes. This central band often shows a central line speckled brown. The female has a white belly.

The distribution area of ​​the species extends along the Adriatic coast from northeast Italy , over Croatia , Montenegro to the north of Albania and also includes the offshore Croatian islands . It lives in the dry flat and hilly country at an altitude of up to 1300 meters, especially on karst areas with few trees and a few bushes. 20 subspecies are currently described.
