Max Braun (zoologist)

Maximilian Christian Gustav Carl Braun (born September 30, 1850 in Myslowitz ( Upper Silesia ), † February 19, 1930 in Königsberg , Prussia ) was a German zoologist.

Life

After attending grammar school in Brieg (Silesia), Braun took part in the war against France in 1870/71. From 1871 to 1874 he studied natural sciences and medicine in Greifswald and Würzburg. In Greifswald he joined the Landsmannschaft Silesia . In 1874 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. After a brief position as assistant at the Zoological Museum in Würzburg , he was also promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. In the summer of 1878 he completed his habilitation in zoology at the University of Würzburg. After a brief activity as a private lecturer in Würzburg, Braun went to the Institute for Comparative Anatomy of the Imperial University of Dorpat as a prosector in 1880 . In 1883 he was appointed professor of zoology in Dorpat . In 1885 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy . In 1886 Braun received a full professorship for zoology at the University of Rostock . From 1891 Braun was a full professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Königsberg and director of the Zoological Museum in Königsberg. There he made special contributions to the establishment of the zoo . In 1901/02 Braun was rector of the University of Königsberg. 1916/1917 he was President of the German Zoological Society . In 1921 he retired in Königsberg.

As a zoologist, Braun is best known for his work on parasitology, some of which have also been translated into English.

Max Braun was married to Toni Leisterer since 1880. Her sons, the geographer Gustav Braun (1881-1940) and the philosopher Otto Braun (1885-1922), also became university teachers.
