Life

The Palace of Justice

Poelaert studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he was a student of the important neoclassical Belgian architect Tieleman Franciscus Suys . Poelaert's most famous buildings are the monumental Brussels Palace of Justice , which towered over the entire city when it was built , the congress column, which had to be higher than the column on the Place Vendôme in Paris, the Church of Our Lady at Laeken , the reconstruction of the Brussels Opera House La Monnaie / De Cheer up after a fire, as well as numerous government buildings.

Poelaert took pleasure in decorating his buildings with symbols of Greco-Roman mythology, which viewers are happy to look for and try to interpret.

Poelaert died, suddenly and unexpectedly, four years before the completion of his main work, the Palace of Justice. No plans or documents of his work could be found after his death. However, more than 800 architectural drawings have recently been found during renovation work in the basement of the palace. The drawings are to be handed over to the Reichsarchiv by the building management and published in digital form.
