Pogrom in Kirovabad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pogrom in Kirowabad was a pogrom carried out by Azerbaijanis that was perpetrated against members of the Armenian minority in November 1988 in Kirowabad (today Gəncə , Germanized Ganja ), the second largest city in Azerbaijan .

During the pogrom, Soviet troops were deployed for security purposes with the task of protecting the Armenians in Kirovabad. The Los Angeles Times reported that soldiers prevented dozens of Azerbaijani attempts to massacre the Armenian people in their homes.

According to the same Los Angeles Times report of November 27, 1988, Soviet Union authorities confirmed the deaths of seven people. These were three Red Army soldiers , three Azerbaijanis and one Armenian. Other official reports at the time reported the deaths of 10 to 12 people. Human rights activists, however, spoke of up to 130 people killed in Kirovabad alone. The New York Times already wrote on November 26 that the dissident and Nobel Peace Prize winner Andrei Sakharov also reported more than 130 killed and over 200 wounded Armenians in the city.
