The Point Henry aluminum smelter is located in the Moolap industrial area in Geelong in Victoria , Australia . The aluminum smelter has an annual production capacity of 185,000 tons of aluminum . It is operated by Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals (AWAC), a joint venture between Alcoa (60%) and Alumina Limited (39.25%). Alumina is delivered by ship and unloaded in the Port of Geelong , of which about half of the aluminum is delivered to the neighboring facility of Alcoa Australia Rolled Products , which rolls aluminum into sheets for processing. The remaining aluminum is transported on the road as bars. About 1,000 people are employed in the Point Henry aluminum smelter.

The construction of the smelter was started in 1960 by the Cavalier Construction Company and the aluminum production started in 1962, the full operation began on April 4, 1963. The first electrical supply of the aluminum smelter came from a 220 kV line via the Geelong Terminal Station . When production began, a maximum of 39.76 MW was drawn. In June 1964 it was 68.38 MW and in October 1964 76.6 MW, more than the entire Geelong region consumed. In November 1965, there were 78.88 MW, in February 1967 79.84 MW and 140 MW in 1969. As of March 20, 1969 provided Alcoa own lignite power plant , the power plant Anglesea , electricity. The power plant with a capacity of 150 MW is connected to the aluminum smelter via a 30-kilometer high-voltage line and is used to support supplies from the Victoria's electricity grid.

In order to secure the annual production of 185,000 tons of aluminum, the smelter now requires an output of 360 MW of which around 40% is provided by the Anglesea power station. The Point Henry aluminum smelter and the aluminum smelter in Portland use 18 to 25% of the electricity in the entire Australian state. In March 2010 it was announced that the operators of the Loy Yang power plant had signed an electricity supply contract for both aluminum smelters with a term until 2036. The previous contracts expire in 2014.
