Point Alden is an icy cape with seaward facing rocky outcrops. It marks the west side of the entrance to the Commonwealth Bay and separates the coast of George V Land from that of Adélieland in East Antarctica .
The cape was discovered on January 30, 1840 by participants in the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1942) led by the American polar explorer Charles Wilkes . Wilkes named it after the later Rear Admiral James Alden (1810-1877), lieutenant aboard the USS Vincennes , flagship of this expedition.
